Company Profile
The Facts

John Jones Steel is a well-established company
known throughout New Zealand for its proven ability
to successfully undertake structural steel fabrication
projects of any magnitude.
Its a modern and well-equipped Christchurch
workshop extends to more than 4,900 m2 in a series of
adjoining high-stud buildings, providing covered facilities
for every stage of the fabrication and finishing process.
An in-house drawing office handles
all workshop plans and quantity surveying functions,
contributing to a very high level of overall efficiency.
The retention of large stocks of typical structural
steel profiles and sizes in the workshop minimises delays
and again results in great efficiency of operation.
Seven overhead workshop cranes, a maximum hook height
of six metres and a railway linking all workshop bays
keep work and stock flowing steadily at all times.
Continual reinvestment in the best
workshop, delivery and on-site plant keeps John Jones
Steel at the forefront of current practice in the structural
steel industry. A new full-recovery shot blasting booth
measuring 13 x 4.5 x 3.5 metres will soon be followed
by an automated sectional shot blaster.
A staff of fifty is almost evenly
divided between the workshop and the site locations,
providing the flexibility and backup required to work
co-operatively and effectively with other contractors
on-site.
Cherry pickers and working platform
trucks with a 10 metre reach ensure compliance with
all existing legislative requirements regarding industrial
safety and contribute to an impeccable work safety record.
With thirty years of experience in
the structural steel industry in New Zealand John Jones
Steel has built an enviable reputation for commitment
to its clients and to the industry, for competitive
pricing, quality of workmanship and unflagging reliability.
The company is affiliated to the SCI-NZ with
Managing Director Frank Van Schaijik being a founding
member. These many factors combine to ensure John Jones
Steel Ltd.'s successful involvement in the majority
of structural steel projects undertaken in Canterbury
and in larger projects throughout the South Island.
Whatever your project, big or small, it can be entrusted
to John Jones Steel with total confidence.
History
John Jones Steel was established in
a small Sydenham workshop in 1964 by W.J.M. & M.B.C.
Van Schaijik. The company soon prospered and in 1972
erected a 2500 m2 building on its present Falsgrave
Street site.
Large steel sections were hard to
obtain in New Zealand at that time and this led the
directors to begin indenting their own steel shipments
through merchants and carrying significant stocks of
the typical sizes needed in their work. This proved
a very efficient way to operate and has become a distinguishing
feature of the company, ensuring delays are eliminated
wherever possible. Stocks held today average 600 tons
at any given time.
Additions in 1979, 1994 and 1996 have
taken the building to its present size of 4903 m2 and
make it possible to carry out every stage of the fabrication
and finishing processes, for all work, under one roof.
